Notes from 9-8-11

Section 1.2
Absolute Value Practice

1) 3-2 |4-x| = -11
-2 |4-x| = -14
|4-x| = 7
4-x = 7 -4+x = 7
x = -3 x = 11

2) |2x-3| < 9
2x-3 < 9 -2x+3 < 9
2x < 12 -2x < 6
x < 6 x > -3
-3 < x < 6

Interval Notation:
-3 x 6 can also be expressed as (-3, 6)

-3 x 6 can also be expressed as [-3, 6]

3) |x+3| + |2-5x| = 7

Critical Values: when the expression inside of the absolute value turns to zero
critical value of |x+3| = -3
critical value of |2-5x| = 2/5

If x < -3:
x is not less than -3

If -3 < x < 2/5:

If x > 2/5:
